“Protist Rhapsody” is an immersive full-dome experience, capturing an ongoing real-time computational experiment in digital matter and artificial life. Driven by Uncharted Limbo’s custom algorithm, the Protist’s behavior goes beyond the archetypical Physarum simulation, incorporating macroscopic agent-like behaviours and global shape control. A digital entity emerges, mirroring the dynamics of slime mold, while caught in a struggle between its instinctive drives and the forces of its environment. The piece traces a brief life cycle of Birth, Destruction, and Resurrection of the digital organism, offering a meditative reflection on the fragile balance between the inner self and the external world, between individuality and adaptation. The collaboration with sound designer Elias Aronidis for the soundscape and the “voice” of the Protist, won the “Best Sound-Driven Work” award at SAT Fest 2024.
Uncharted limbo Collective
Uncharted Limbo is a London & Athens-based collective of creative coders and visual artists, crafting cutting-edge New Media experiences at the intersection of code, interactive visuals, and performing arts. Drawing inspiration from the complexity of natural phenomena and human movement, the collective collaborates with choreographers, directors, composers, and scientists to create digital artworks across various scales. The core team — George Adamopoulos, Eleana Polychronaki, Chris Waters and Philip Pappas — combines expertise in Architecture, Computational Design, Software Development, and VFX. They weave visual storytelling with the latest advances in computational geometry, real-time simulation, motion capture, machine learning, and game technology. Their work manifests as holographic projections for live performance, digital films, VR experiences, interactive exhibits, 360 dome projections, and computationally designed sculptures; Featured in prestigious institutions and festivals worldwide, including BFI Film Festival, London College of Fashion, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Victoria & Albert Museum, SAT Montreal and the Arte European Culture TV channel.
