Crafting Meaning from Material
Inspired by “The Carrier Bag Theory Of Fiction”, the famous essay by Ursul Le Guin where she shifts our focus away from the heroic pov proposing an alternative framework, this workshop explores the concepts of gathering, holding, and transforming. Participants will construct skeletal frameworks—symbolic “carriers”—and weave recycled fabrics onto them, creating objects that blend storytelling, handcrafting, and digital arts. The final creations embody the idea of collecting fragments and weaving them into meaningful narratives emphasizing humanity’s role as part of a larger, interconnected ecosystem rather than as a conqueror of nature. During the session participants will be introduced to emergent ways of storytelling, digital fabrication, the concept of circular economy, as well as to the stories that material carry. The frameworks, created through laser cutting, will be provided to the participants for assembly. Each participant will weave selected fabrics into a new, personalized container of a story, guided by their personal narrative.

Marilena Georgantzi & Iason Giraud ( Piraeus Maker Space)
“The Carrier Bag Alchemy” is the result of a collaboration between Marilena Georgantzi & Iason Giraud, both having studied architecture (NTUA), they continued their studies in interactive media, digital fabrication, smart materials and philosophy (IAAC & NTUA). Marilena Georgantzi is a set designer and visual artist. Her practice lies in the activation of personal and collective memories, rethinking historiography as artistic storytelling and as a system of layers often untangling traces of water and earth strata. Her work includes soft environments made through textile manipulation and printmaking as well as fragmented writings. Iason Giraud (PHD Candidate, CastorC, The Cyprus Institute) is a researcher and architect with extensive experience in circular economy, geospatial urban analysis, and digital technologies. He currently serves as a researcher at the University of Cyprus. He has developed strong expertise in sustainable urban design and the use of innovative digital tools. Together, they serve as scientific directors of the Circular Economy Lab of the Municipality of Piraeus, Piraeus Makerspace, where they teach and organize workshops on digital fabrication and the principles of the circular economy.
